Our ZAM cable tray is made from zinc-aluminum-magnesium coated steel, a newer generation of coating that protects steel better than ordinary zinc. Adding aluminum and magnesium to the zinc coating forms a denser, more stable protective layer, so the tray resists corrosion longer in humid, outdoor, and industrial air. The coating is applied to the steel sheet at the mill, then the tray is cut, punched, and formed, which keeps the surface uniform and the cost between pre-galvanized and stainless steel.
Key Features
- Stronger corrosion protection than ordinary zinc: the aluminum and magnesium in the coating form a protective layer that resists corrosion better than a plain zinc coating
- Cut-edge protection: zinc-aluminum-magnesium coatings tend to protect cut edges better than plain zinc coatings, because corrosion products spread over the exposed steel
- Uniform, clean surface: the coating is applied before forming, so the finish is smooth and consistent
- Lighter than thick hot-dip coatings: good protection from a thinner coating layer, without the rougher surface of hot-dip galvanizing
- Ventilated, easy-access base: perforations let heat escape and let cable ties be fixed anywhere along the run
- Complete system: matching bends, tees, reducers, covers, splice plates, and brackets can be supplied in the same material

Material: zinc-aluminum-magnesium (ZAM) coated steel, [confirm coating grade and coating weight]. Tray type: [confirm, e.g. perforated, ladder, solid-bottom]. Standard length: [confirm, e.g. 2000 mm]. Custom widths, heights, thicknesses, lengths, and hole patterns are available on request.
Where to Use It
- Outdoor and rooftop cable routes
- Humid, damp, and industrial areas
- Solar power plants and utility projects
- Tunnels, metro, and infrastructure projects
- Locations where pre-galvanized tray is not enough and stainless steel would cost too much
ZAM, Pre-Galvanized, Hot-Dip Galvanized, or Stainless Steel?
| Pre-galvanized | ZAM | Hot-dip galvanized | Stainless steel | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Basic | Good, better than plain zinc | Good, thick zinc layer | Excellent |
| Cut edges | Uncoated | Better protected than plain zinc | Coated | Not coated, material itself resists |
| Typical use | Dry indoor | Outdoor, humid, industrial | Outdoor, heavy industrial | Coastal, chemical, hygienic |
| Cost | Lowest | Medium | Medium to higher | Highest |
For strongly corrosive sites such as coastal, offshore, or chemical environments, ask us about stainless steel.
Good to Know
- Cut edges: ZAM coatings help protect cut edges, but it is still good practice to treat field-cut ends following the manufacturer's instructions
- Match the hardware: use fasteners and brackets with a suitable corrosion protection, so hardware does not become the weak point
- Tell us the environment: the right coating grade depends on how corrosive the site is, so send us the conditions and we will advise
